DEATH OF A PIONEER
Austin Abbott Passes Away at the Ripe Old Age of Eighty Years
Austin Abbott, the prominent orchardist and one of Tuolumne;s pioneer citizens, died Wednesday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs F A McPherson, in this city, in the eightieth year of his age.
For the past few years the deceased had been in feeble health. His years of toil and care and age had broken his health, and he knew the messenger of death was hovering over him when removed to Sonora from his mountain home two weeks ago. Three days before his death he lapsed into unconsciousness and died in that condition.
Mr Abbott was born in Hudson City, New York, and like thousands of others was attracted to the shores of the Pacific om that memorable year, 1849. He sailed in the bark "Nautilus" and after a perilous journey landed safely in San Francisco, and soon thereafter was energetically engaged in placer mining of this county. With the decadence of the placiers Mr Abbott commenced to farm on the North Branch of Sullivan's creek, later setting out an apple orchard which today is famous for the beauty and finely flavored character of its product. Here Mr Abbott married and surrounded himself with a family to whom he was deeply attached and by whom he was tenderly loved. Mr Abbott was the soul of honor in all things, and the world is infinitely better for his living in it.
The deceased leaves a wife and five children: Mrs F Nichols, a step-daughter, Eugene S Abbott, Tax Collector of this county, Henry L and Miss Mayme Abbott and Mrs F A McPherson.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, and internment was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
