BAKERSVILLE - George Byrd, 66, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn.

He was born in Mitchell County to the late Ted R. and Zella Buchanan Byrd. He was a self employed carpenter, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was Chairman of the Deacon Board of Tocane Baptist Church for over 25 years and was a past Sunday School superintendent.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Beaver Byrd of the home one son, Gordon and wife Kori Byrd of Bakersville two daughters, Libby and husband Robbie Self and Karla and husband Dale Buchanan, all of Bakersville one brother, Bradley Byrd of Bakersville three sisters, Alice Garland of Bakersville, Nell Coleman of Georgia and Teddy Lynn Malone of Jonesborough, Tenn. and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Byrd.
Burial will follow in Bailey Memorial Cemetery.
