Born at Lissa (Silesia, Polish Leszno), studies of philosophy and Jewish religion in Breslau and Berlin. 1895 rabbi, first in Opole in Silesia, later at Duisburg and Duesseldorf. Leading representative of Jewish liberalism. Since 1912 in Berlin. 1922 chairman of the General association of German rabbis, 1924 of the German section of B'nai B'rith. 1933 President of the Reich representation of German Jews (RDJ), a defense league against National Socialism. 1943 deported to Theresienstadt. Since 1948 in London.
His wife Nathalie (1878-1937) is buried on the Jewish cemetery of Berlin-Weissensee.
