Inscription on the headstone: "Sacred to the memory of Walter Bagehot MA, Author Economist Critic".

Bagehot was an editor of the weekly The Economist, which had been founded by his father-in-law James Wilson. In 1876 he published "The English constitution", considered to be a classic.
