Emil and Caroline (with their son Emil) came to the United States in December 1881 and eventually settled in Lemont, Illinois where the family owned several businesses.
By all accounts, Caroline (who had dark red hair) had a fiery disposition and did not suffer fools. She died on February 15, 1952, shortly after breaking her hip in a fall. Characteristically, she refused to see a doctor.
