Son of professor Jacob A. and Mary Goble Badertscher. He was a native of Bloomington and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1933, then entered Indiana University where he received his B.S. degree in 1937. He was awarded his M.D. degree in 1940, following which he went to Indianapolis to intern at IU Medical Center. He had been granted a 3-year fellowship at the Mayo Clinic but took a leave of absence to enter the armed forces. He was an Army Air Corp flight surgeon. He was killed in an airplane crash near Eqistos, Peru. The plane in which he was flying crashed while it was on a search mission for the plane of the Squadron Commander.

He was married to Martha Badertscher and had a five year old daugher, Barbara.
