John Hamilton "Ham" Fleming was born in Pennsylvania to William and Mary Greer Fleming. His father died when he was 8, and his mother remarried to John Yost. The family was close-knit. John Yost was a barrel maker and he taught the boys woodworking: Ham became a carpenter. He had a sister named Rachel, a brother named William, and 3 half-siblings: Andrew, Charlie, H.M. and Mary.
During the Civil War, Ham was a White House Guard while enlisted in Company K of the 150th Pennsylvania Regiment, and during this time he corresponded with President Abraham Lincoln. The family moved to Tennessee in 1865, and he married Rachel Homan Dec 31, 1867. They had two sons, John and Harry. While Ham and Rachel and Harry remained in Tennessee, their son John lived in Alabama and Georgia, before returning to live in Tennessee.
