The family lived in Olden, on the Isle of Aero in Denmark until just after Peter's birth when they moved to Blans in Ullerup Parish, a small farming village in the southern part of mainland Denmark. There Peter met his wife, Marie Christine Dethlefsen, they married at nearby Sottrup in Sonderborg Parish.
The couple started a family, their first child a girl was Catherina Maria, then came Hans Peter and Christine, then finally Mary Anderson. Soon after little Mary was born Peter Jensen Anderson moved his young family to Franklin, Louisiana where his younger brothers Jacob and Jens had recently settled.
Peter's wife Marie Christine died within the first decade of living in Louisiana and he was thus listed as a widower in the 1900 U.S. Census
