Gerald Vinci, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Fallbrook Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Vinci, a professional violinist, was born Cesare Sodero, Jr. in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Feb. 22, 1927. He began his study of the violin at age 3, and made his professional debut at age 11 at Radio City Music Hall, with his father, Cesare Sodero, conducting the New York Civic Symphony Orchestra in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. He moved to Los Angeles in 1940, where he performed regularly on radio and television while he continued his music studies. He was concertmaster of the San Diego Symphony from 1950-1951, then returned to Los Angeles and pursued a career as a studio musician, working with such artists as Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Barbara Streisand and Michel Legrand on record dates and motion picture scores. Many people will remember his violin solo performance which dominated the score of the Mel Brooks film, "Young Frakenstein."
He retired to Fallbrook in 1989, where he enjoyed playing golf, listening to all kinds of music from Mozart to Ellington and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Vista Valley Country Club, and of Christ the King Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Fallbrook.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the American Cancer Society or to Christ the King Lutheran Church.
