Actor. Born in Berlin to a single mother. They were later evacuated to East Prussia and returned to Germany after the war. They moved from city to city until his mother was declared unfit to raise a child and Gottfried was placed in a orphanage. When he was fifteen his mother helped him escape and they traveled through France until they finally settled in Paris. His mother encouraged him to become an actor. He took private acting lessons in Berlin after he failed the entrance exam to the National Theatre School. He worked at theaters in Berlin, Hannover, Bonn and Heidelberg. He appeared in his first movie in 1971 and later worked several times with Rainer Werner Fassbinder including "Die Ehe der Maria Braun" (1979), "Lilli Marleen" (1981) 'Berlin-Alexanderplatz' (1980). He was internationally known for his appearances in 'GoldenEye' (1995), 'Asterix and Obelix take on Caesar' (1999) and 'Proof of Life' (2000). He also recorded two audiobooks, 'The Hours' by Michael Cunningham and 'Dead Souls' by Nikolai Gogol. In 2000 he published his autobiography 'Bekenntnisse eines Unerzogen' and three years later the novel 'Das fünfte Wort'.
