He was the son of Matthias Elmore and Elizabeth Appleton Elmore. He moved to Lafayette County, Mississippi by 1846 when he was listed as a cash customer at the Tyro store. He married before 1817 in Newberry County, South Carolina to a lady whose first name was Nancy. Together they had twelve children, at least three of whom moved with them to Lafayette County, Mississippi.
