William Henry Starkey, oldest of three children of Francis Marion and Martha Jane Horton Starkey, was born in Washington County, Missouri, June 18, 1876, and passed away in the Lincoln County Memorial Hospital October 21, 1957, at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 3 days.
In 1892 he came with his parents from Washington County to Lincoln County where he remained the rest of his life.
On February 21, 1906, Mr. Starkey was married to Miss Gussie Mueller. Their marriage was blessed with 2 sons, William and Melvin. Mr. Starkey first engaged in blacksmithing, and later started farming, the occupation he followed the rest of his working years.
One sister, Lucille Bell Starkey, passed away in July of 1892, at the age of 6 years.
Surviving Mr. Starkey are: his wife, Mrs. Gussie Starkey, of the home; his sons, William and Melvin, their wives, Mary and Thelma, one grandson, Edward Starkey and his wife, Bonnie, one granddaughter, Betty Jo and her husband, David Harke, 2 great-granddaughters, Karla Kay Harke and Rhonda Faye Starkey, all of Troy; one brother, Harvey, of Wright City; 4 sisters-in-law; 4 brothers-in-law; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and many, many friends.
Mr. Starkey was a member of the Zion E&R Church, Troy, having united with this congregation in 1921.
"Pap" Starkey, as he was known to his many friends was a kind, patient man who was never known to speak a harsh word. Even during his long period of affliction he never lost the happy, gentle character that he always had. He will be greatly missed, not only by his family but by the host of friends he had made thru his life among us.
Funeral services were held from the Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home to the Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church of Troy on Wednesday, October 23, 1957, at 2:00 p.m. Following the services, which were conducted by Rev. William V. Tollas, Mr. Starkey was laid to rest in the Troy Cemetery.
