Soviet Union Premier. Born in Nagutskaya, Russia, he graduated from Water Transport Technical College in 1936, was elected First Secretary of the Yaroslavl Regional Committee of the YCL, in 1938 and was First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Finnish Soviet Republic, (1940-44). During World War II, he took part in partisan activities in Finland and was elected Second Secretary of the Finnish Communist Party, in 1947. He was Soviet Ambassador to Hungary, (1954-56), returned to Moscow and was head of the Department for Liaison with Communist and Workers' Parties, (1957-67). Through the 1970s, he served as a KGB director and was chairman of the KGB, (1980-82). In 1982, he was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union and served until his death at age 69.
