Roland was the son of David and Amy June Gifford Braun. He had 3 sisters.

On 31 Mar 1935 he married Dorothy C. Jones in rural Washburn.

Roland and Dorothy had three children.

1. Roselyn Joy (Ray Thielbar) of Ely, MN
2. John Roland (Valerie) of Morton
3. Marilyn June (Larry Simmons) of Streator

He had farmed in the Washburn area all his life and had worked for the Marshall-Putnam Soil and Water Conservation District. Roland also was curator of Braun's Indian Artifacts & Burial Museum in Wilbern. He also was a member of Lacon-Sparland United Methodist Church, where he was a lay leader and Sunday school teacher.
