Maria Barbier. Committed by Selden S. Wright Probate Judge of San Francisco Oct. 11th 1869. Age 26 years; native of France; married;? was last from France; has been in California six years; occupation, housewife. The evidence of insanity is she has exhibited since the death of her husband decided symptoms of insanity; on one occasion she attempted to strangle herself, and another she tried to set fire to her bedding; when opposed she becomes very violent - she is perfectly indifferent to her little child - will not take care of it; she gets up at midnight and waters the sidewalk - Her friends are in constant dread of her setting fire to the house or of injuring herself. This attack appeared 5 months ago and is the first; disease increasing - sometimes has rational intervals but irregular; no change in health; cause of insanity, loss of her husband and pecuniary difficulties; class, mania.
Admitted October 12th 1869. Has no property. Died August 27th 1871 of Tuberculosis.

Louis Barbier was the husband of Maria (MNU). They had three known children. Their twin sons were born Dec. 29, 1867 in San Francisco; Jules E. having lived 16 days and Benoit having lived 21 days. It is not known what happened to the child mentioned in Maria's commitment record and her admittance to the Stockton Asylum on October 12th 1869.
