Mary Barry. Committed by Steph G. Nye Judge of Alameda Co. June 17th 1870. Age about 30 years; native of Ireland; married; has three children, the youngest 3 months old; maiden name Mary Lyons, husband's name Richard Barry; was last from New Jersey; has been in California 5 years; occupation, wife of a laboring man, a farmer. The evidence of insanity is wild incoherent language & violence - imagines that people are undermining the house - that her friends are going to kill her - that her youngest child is drowned and like delusions; is neither homicidal, suicidal nor incendiary except as to one man whose grain fields she attempted to burn and persistently threatens to burn. This attack appeared a week ago and is the first; disease stationary - no entirely rational intervals; has no hallucination; is dangerous to herself, her children and their property; is disposed to injure her husband and his most intimate friends; is not filthy or destructive; has no insane relations; no peculiarities; has been temperate; has not suffered from disease or injury; is weaker since the attack; cause unknown; class, mania.
Admitted June 18th 1870. Died June 24th 1870 of Puerperal mania.
