Author. A leading New Zealand writer, she was born in Dunedin, in the South Island of New Zealand. She suffered poor mental health and entered Seacliff Mental Hospital as a patient in 1947, were she remained in psychiatric care for seven years. Her first collection of short stories, “The Lagoon” was published in 1951 when she was 26, for which she received the Hubert Church Memorial Award. Later books included “Owls Do Cry”, “Faces In the Water”, “The Adaptable Man” and “Living In The Maniototo”. Her work “An Angel At My Table” was made into a movie in 1991, by Oscar winning Director Jane Campion. She became a member of the Order of New Zealand in 1990, and was regularly tipped to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, which never happened in her lifetime. She passed away after being diagnosed with leukemia. She was 79.
