Michael's parents were born in Germany. Michael married Henrietta Senseman in 1835. They moved to Ohio sometime before 1842. They were poor and used the tailgate of a wagon for a table for several years. After living in Greene County for seven years, they moved to Darke County where they purchased land and farmed. Michael served as justice of the peace in Adams Township from 1846 until 1852. In 1859, they moved to Covington. In 1872, at age 59, Michael suffered a stroke and was forced to retire because of paralysis. He died two years after Henrietta at the age of 82. In a published history of Miami County, he was characterized as being "one of the most reliable and highly-respected citizens" of Newberry Township. He was a person of some means and $60,000 in lands and property were distributed among his five living children after his death.
