Pro football player. After graduating from the University of Arkansas, he was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1950 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts. He spent 1950 with the Baltimore Colts franchise. After sitting out the 1951 season, he played from 1952-54 with the Chicago Bears, returning a kickoff for his only touchdown as a professional in 1952. His best year as a pro was in 1953 when he had 659 yards rushing, receiving and on kick returns. After spending 1955 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he retired with 1,306 total yards in his five-year NFL career. His career was cut short by knee injuries. He received his nickname when he bent a railroad spike in half during his first year in college. He was unbelievably strong. He was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.
