The nephew of actress Helen Hayes and writer Charles MacArthur. he made appearances in the theater on Broadway in New York City, New York in plays such as "Victoria Regina" and "Tobacco Road" before going to Hollywood in 1941 for roles in motion pictures. He would go on to appear in over thirty films, with roles in "A Guy Named Joe" (1943), "Song of the Thin Man" (1947), "The Walking Hills" (1949), "The Texas Rangers" (1951), "The Raiders" (1952), "Short Cut to Hell" (1957) and "The Oregon Trail" (1959). In 1954 he co-starred in the television series "It's a Great Life." He died of cancer.
