A native of Muhlenburg County,Ky.,he retired in 1973 from Bridges and Smith Paint Co. in Louisville.He was a Navy veteran of World War I,and a member of Central Christian Church,Depauw Masonic Lodge 338 F&AM,and an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Survivors include his wife,the former Melva G.Wiltheis Oates,three sons,Murl R.Oates of New Albany,Jack N.and Lynn W.,both of Floyds Knobs,one daughter,Melva K Adams of New Albany,one brother,Austin Oates of Indianapolis,one sister,Mrs.Edna V.Haun of Clarksville,and 11 grandchildren.
