Second Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Midsomer Norton, he served as a Private in Company C, 1stBattalion, Derbyshire Regiment, British Army. On September 30, 1901, Private Bees was a member of the Maxin Gun detachment in actions with the Boars in Moedwill, South Africa. When his wounded comrades were asking for water, he went out under heavy fire, to a ridge held by Boars about 500 yards ahead of the forward guns and brought back a kettle full of water. On going and returning he had to pass within 100 yards of some rocks also held by the Boars and the kettle which he was carrying was hit by several bullets. For courage and determination in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on December 17, 1901. After 12 years of military service he retired as a Corporal and was employed as an engine driver at the Gas Works in Coalville, England. During World War I, he served in the Royal Army Service Corps Reserves and was discharged in 1919. He returned to Coalville, where he lived until his death at age 66.
