Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Stalybridge, England, he served as a Deputy Assistant Commissary officer of Ordnance in the Commissariat Department, East India Company, British Army. On May 11, 1857 at Delhi, India, Deputy Assistant Commissary Buckley was one of nine men who defended the ammunition storehouse for more than five hours against large numbers of mutineers. When the wall was being scaled hope of outside help was gone, they blew up the ammunition, killing many of the mutineers. Of the defenders, five died in the explosion while Deputy Assistant Commissary Buckley and the others survived. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 18, 1858 and later advanced to the rank of Major. He died at age 63 in London, England.
