Second Opium War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Ewhurst Park, Hampshire, England, he served as an Ensign in the 67th Regiment of Foot, British Army. During an assault on the Taku Forts, China, on August 14, 1860, Ensign Chaplin was a member of the storming party. Ensign Chaplin carrying the Queen’s Colors of the Regiment, assisted by an enlisted man, was the first to breach the cavalier of the fort and plant the colors. In doing this he was severely wounded. For distinguished gallantry, he as awarded the Victoria Cross on August 13, 1861. Remaining in the Army, he later achieved the rank of Colonel, was created a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1887 and retired in 1888. He died at age 80 in Leicestershire, England.
