Son of Simon Fraser (13th Lord Lovat and 2nd Baron Lovat) and Alice Mary Weld-Blundell.

He succeeded his father, becoming 14th Lord Lovat and 3rd Baron Lovat. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. In 1899, he founded the Lovat Scouts, which he led into action during the Second Boer War. He was also a veteran of World War One, during which he rose to the rank of Brigadier and commanded the Highland Mounted Brigade.

His numerous honours include investment as a Knight of the Thistle (KT), Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO), Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG), Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB), and a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). The French government awarded him the Legion of Honour.

In 1910, he married the Hon. Laura Lister at Brompton Oratory in London.
