Father of Turlough Major Aubrey O'Brien, CBE; Edward Donough O'Brien; Moira Winifred Oclanis (O'Brien) Barstow; and Winifred Mary Sheila O'Brien.

Educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst.

Commisioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in 1891, promoted to 1st lieutenant in 1892. Transferred to the Indian Army, subsequently promoted to captain in 1901. Promoted to major in 1909, and later to lieutenant colonel. Served as Commissioner of the North-West frontier districts of the Punjab, and served as a district judge and Deputy Commissioner of Kangra.

Appointed a Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1906 and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1919.

Author of numerous works about Indian culture and folklore.
