Abraham Beekman was born to Aaron John Bastedo, Jr and Margaret Young. After the death of Henri Bendel's wife, Blanche Lehman Bendel in 1895, Abraham became the spouse of Henri, who was the founder of the fashionable New York women's fashion house, Henri Bendel. Upon the sudden death of Henri in 1936, Abraham became president of the company. In his will, Henri made Abraham, his companion for over 30 years, one of the principal benefactors of his estate.
