Obituary:

Daniel Wayne Dewey, 17, died November 13, 1979 in St. Helena Parish. Daniel was a native of Salinas, CA and a resident of Dayton, TX. He is survived by his father & step-mother, Edward & Judy Dewey, Pahrump, NV.; 3 brothers, Billy Dewey, Dayton, TX, Norman Dewey, Ponca City, OK, Scott Dewey, Ponca City, OK. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ada Juanita Dewey. Private funeral services were held at the McKneely & Vaughn Funeral, Amite, on Monday, June 23, 2008 at 10:30M. Conducted by the Rev. Mike Foster. Special thanks to Lt. Dennis Stewart with the Louisiana State Police for his relentless time spent working to conclude this case. Lt. Stewart worked on this case from 1996 until it was solved last week. Also many thanks to Mary H. Manhein, Director of the FACES Laboratory at LSU for her timeless effort and dedication to this case. We extend our gratitude and appreciation to Pine Hill Cemetery and to the individuals who continued to place flowers on his temporary grave for 29 years. God Bless all of you.

--Note: After his death, Daniel was temporarily interred under a tombstone reading "Unidentified Homicide Victim" in Pine Hill Cemetery. On July 31, 2000 he was exhumed for additional testing. Since that period of time, he was stored in the county morgue. Dedicated New Orleans state trooper, Dennis Stewart, never gave up on Daniel's case and was eventually able to identify him in August of 2008. Soon after, Daniel's family held a memorial service and his remains were cremated. His family now has his ashes.
