Lydia was the daughter of Elihu and Abigail (Gibbs) Grout. She was married to Henry Newcomb Hurd on April 9, 1862, and they had one son, Joseph H. Hurd, born August 2, 1863. Henry died January 26, 1863. Lydia married, second, Silas Boynton on December 17, 1864. They had two sons, George and Israel Boynton. Silas died April 8, 1889. Lydia married, third, Edmund D. Chaffee on November 13, 1889.
