William H. Brown enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and volunteered for parachutist duty.

He was assigned to the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Praachute Infantry Regiment.

Bill was amongst the more than 2200 men of the 508th that jumped into Normandy on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. He was also one of about 950 that were able to come out after 33 straight days of combat before the regiment was relieved. The rest had been killed, wounded or captured.

He also jumped with the regiment on Sepember 17, 1944 as part of Operation Market-Garden in the Nijmegen, Holland area.

In December of that same year the 508th was once again sent into action, this time during the so-called Battle of The Bulge in Belgium.

Following the cessation of hostilities, the 508th was recognized for its outstanding contributions and was appointed as the Honor Guard for General Eisenhower at SHAEF HQ in Frankfurt, Germany.
