Walter enlisted in the Army from the National Guard on Jan 16, 1941. He volunteered for parachutist duty and was assigned to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

He parachuted into Normandy, France on D-Day June 6, 1944 and was awarded the CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge)for action during the Normandy, France Campaign, 6 June 1944 to 9 July 1944.

Pvt Bednarz also jumped into Holland on September 17, 1944 as part of Operation Market (the airborne portion of Market-Garden).

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (posthumously) "For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, on 17 September 1944". He was fatally wounded and died the following day.
