SOUTH BEND - Amanda Luanne Mitchell ran through the gates of heaven on July 8, 2009 at 6:54 p.m. to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. She was diagnosed with cancer (osteosarcoma) in December 2006, and fought a long hard and courageous battle. She was involved with raising money for St. Baldricks for cancer research, and raising awareness for autism in honor of her little brother. Amanda had attended McKinley Elementary School with her brother Austin before moving on to Jefferson Intermediate School where she won a Sportsmanship Award for running cross-country with a broken arm. She also enjoyed playing the violin. Her many parties including Chick-Fil-A and telling her nurses how to do their job! She also enjoyed working with her Pt (physical therapist) Miriam. She was also very proud of her older brother and loved him very much. She will always be remembered for her selfless, spunky personality, her beautiful blue eyes and big smile. Amanda is survived by her parents John & Christine (Gushwa) Mitchell of South Bend, two brothers, Andrew (17), and Austin (11) both at home. Also surviving is her maternal grandmother Brenda Fischer of South Bend, paternal grandparents, Fred & Dorathea Mitchell Jr., of Edwardsburg, MI, maternal great-grandparents, Lucille and Robert Gushwa of South Bend, nine aunts, six uncles, and thirty-seven cousins. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 13, at Trinity Evangelical Free Church, 61770 Miami Road, South Bend. Rev. Craig Clapper will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Church, and one hour prior to services on Monday. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be offered to Trinity Evangelical Free Church or to Riley Cancer Center, 505 Barnhill Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
