Charles was the youngest of 7 children. He was a cowboy-farmer-Methodist preacher. He worked on a ranch as a young man. When he had young children and times were tough, he worked as a sheepherder in the Dakotas for two years, and his family lived with his wife's parents in Kansas. He wrote a poem "The Lonesome Sheepherder." After the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma was opened, he filed on an abandoned 160 acre claim ten mile southwest of Alva,OK. His sister, Nancy, filed on an adjoining 160 acres. All but the two older of his 7 children were born there. Later, he bought a 40 acre farm just south of Wichita where he built several houses.
