Tuesday April 12, 1904
Jacob Auer, one of the pioneer residents of Washington township, died very suddenly at the home of Charles Pook, his son-in-law, Friday morning. He had been ailing most of the winter, but was able to be up and around the house most of the time. He arose as usual Friday morning, dressing himself and prepared for breakfast. He complained of feeling badly and sat down in his favorite chair, but soon asked to be assisted to bed. It was then about 6:30 o'clock and life became extinct in a few moments. The deceased having long been a resident of this county, was widely and favorably known, and a host of friends, besides the many relatives, will mourn his sudden death.
Jacob Auer was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, July 21, 1828, and died in Washington township, Whitley county, April 1st, 1904, at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 20 days. He came to America in 1846 and settled in Fort Wayne. He was united in marriage in 1853 to Miss Sophia Panna, and they soon afterwards settled in this county. To this union there were eight children born, all whom with their mother, survive. The children are Edward Auer, Mrs. Charles Pook, Mrs. Caroline Dressler, William Auer, Henry Auer, Mrs. Mary Seivers, Mrs. Minnie Bowman and Mrs. Anna Briggaman. The deceased was a brother of Michael Auer of Peabody, and was one of the most honorable and upright men in Washington township.
The funeral will occur Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock and going to the frame Lutheran church in Columbia township where the services will be conducted by Rev. Jungkuntz.
