She died May 2, 2016 at a hospital in Sausalito, California, after a report of cardiac arrest at her home, according to Marin Sheriff County's office. Her death came nearly 20 years after her son's.

She was best known for setting up the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation with the profits of her son's posthumous albums. The philanthropic effort, based in Georgia, funds art programs for young people. She also formed Amaru Entertainment, the holding company for her son's unrealesed material.

In addition to philanthropic work she traveled extensively, making guest appearances and giving lectures.
