Jessie Oliver Dykes, 67 died suddenly Saturday while at work near his home in Mt. Victory.
The son of the late Eli Jefferson, and Mary Ann Wells Dykes, Mr. Dykes was born at Dykes Dec. 22, 1886. He was a life long resident of this county.
Mr. Dykes married Miss Sarah Grace Baker, May 12, 1911 and 17 children were born to this union. Three children preceded him in death:
Mr. Dykes professed is faith in Christ and united with the Church of God at Acorn in 1933. He remained true to his faith the remainder of his life, content in the work of the Lord. He devoted his life to the happiness of his family and welcomed each new acquaintance as a close friend.
Mr. Dykes is suvived by his wife; 10 daughters; Mrs. Rose Ella Bradley, Dykes, Mrs. Clementine Warren, Miss Venice Dykes, Miss Fern Dykes, all of Cincinnati, Mrs. Helen Flynn, Mrs. Flonnie Hardwick, and Miss Madeline Dykes, all of Somerset, Miss Jewel Dykes, Miss Geneva Dykes and Miss Betty Jane Dykes all of Mt. Victory; four sons Mr. Jessie Dykes, Jr., Dykes, Mr. Cyrus Dykes, Ruth, Mr. Curtis Dykes, Indianapolis, Mr. Commodore Dykes, Squib.
In addition, Mr. Dykes is suvived by two sisters, Mrs. Hanna Burdine, Madison, Ind., Mrs. Nellie Woodall, Oklahoma; one brother, William Thomas Dykes, Squib; and 36 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Goodwater Church of God. The Rev. Arthur Vaught Conducted the services. Burial was in the Goodwater cemetery.
Note about the above obit:
Venice Dykes, and Jewell Dykes were his sons, not his daughters. Jessie Dykes, Jr. was actually his son Ancil Junior Dykes who was sometimes referred to by his middle name.
The marriage date is also wrong. It was, May 31, 1911 according to the marriage license.
His date of birth on the grave marker is December 22, 1887, and according to his death certificate, he was 66 years old at the time of his death. He died of Coronary Thrombosis while working in his field.
He signed his name both "Jesse" and "Jessie," which has led to some confusion about how his name was really spelled. He was most likely named after his maternal grandfather, Jesse Oliver Wells.
