Venice Lee "Bill" Dykes, 85 years of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 at his residence.

Bill was born in Dykes, Kentucky on May 26th, 1923, son of the late Jessie Oliver Dykes and Sarah Gracie Baker Dykes. He was retired from Mead Paper, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Bill was survived by two sons, Fred (and Linda) Dykes and Doug (and Rosetta) Dykes, both of Somerset, Kentucky; three daughters, Darlene Dykes, Louise (and Marvin) Bullock, and Debbie Adair, all of Somerset, Kentucky; one brother, Jewell Dykes of Somerset, Kentucky; six sisters, Geneva Dykes, Helen Flynn, Flonnie Hardwick, Madeline Ping, and Clementine Warren, all of Somerset, Kentucky, and Fern Vilardo of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Joe, Ben, Johnny, Barbara, Betsy, Belinda, Jamie, Jesse, and Kelli; nine great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Thelma Alene Hyden Dykes; his parents, Jessie Dykes and Gracie Dykes; one daughter, Connie Bray; six brothers, Curt Dykes, Cyrus Dykes, Ancil Dykes, William Dykes, Arthur Dykes, and Commodore Dykes; and three sisters, Eva Dykes, Rose Ella Bradley, and Betty Goodin.

Visitations were held after 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5th, 2008 at the Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill, Kentucky.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6th, 2008 in the Chapel of the Morris & Hislope Funeral Home with Chaplain Charles David Hawk officiating.

Burial followed in the Goodwater Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #38.
