Carl was the son of Elmer Ellsworth & Musadora Hannah (Mason) Callahan. He married Katherine Hacker on February 28, 1919 in Indianapolis. They had a daughter named Marilyn. He was a founder of the Indianapolis Amateur Baseball Association in 1912. He and former Major League Baseball player, Owen J. "Donie" Bush were the owners of the Bush-Callahan Sporting Goods Store on East Washington Street in Indianapolis. He was also a Mason and a member of the Murat Shrine. He was a World War I veteran.
