" G. C. Akins Succumbs At Hospital
George C. Akins, 77, of 610 Orange Street, a retired member of the Oil City Fire Department, died suddenly at 5:15 p.m. Friday in Oil City Hospital, 15 minutes after he was admitted.
Mr. Akins, who served the community as a firemen for 47 years, retired in November, 1955. He was born Jan. 3, 1882, in Saltsburg, Pa., a son of James and Martha Dunmire Akins. He was educated in the Saltsburg schools and in 1893 came to Oil City, where he had resided since. He was married to the former Lillian Barnes June 14, 1905, in Oil City. She died Sept. 14, 1956. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Local 700, Firefighters Union.
Surviving are three sons, Howard A. Akins of Franklin, the Rev. Kenneth Akins of Salisbury, Md., and Melvin G. Akins of Bradentown Beach, Fla.; five daughters, Mrs. Lester (Gladys) Rice of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Mrs. V. D. (Marian) Dolby, Mrs. W. Clayton (Alma) Stevens and Mrs. Ralph (Winnifred) Russell of Oil City and Mrs. James (Lois) Kelly of Paris, France. Other survivors are four brothers, William and Charles of Leechburg, Oliver of Saltsburg and Grover of Jeannette; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Rose) Pugh of Leechburg and Mrs. Etta Myers of Saltsburg, and 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
The body was removed to the Norman O. Morton Funeral Home, where friends may call after 7 p.m. today. Funeral arrangements will be announced."
