Hazel Erna Davis Steve passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Born May 24, 1919 in Caroline, NY, she was the third child of Floyd Davis Sr. and Romelia Johnson Davis. Mrs. Steve graduated from Newark Valley High School at the age of 15 and at age 16 she passed the requirements to enter Cortland Normal School, now known as Cortland State College, but because of her age she was too young to work to earn her room and board. On May 27th, 1939, she married Roger J. Steve after meeting him at a dance at the Stewart Park Pavilion. During WWII, Mrs. Steve worked at Ithaca Gun as a bombsight inspector and later retired after thirteen years of service at the media/film desk at the Tompkins County Library. Mrs. Steve is survived by sons, Roger II (Roberta) Steve of Riner, Virginia and Robert Steve of Honeoye Falls, NY; four grandchildren, Roger III (Lisa) Steve of Freeville, Tami (Chris) Norman of Groton, Jennifer Sherwood of St. Paul, MN and Amylynn Sherwood of Alexandria, VA; four great-grandchildren, Roger J. Steve IV, Katelyn and Sam Norman and Kassie McDole. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger J. Steve in 2000; a daughter, Bonita in 1943; and siblings, Margaret Kells, Roland Davis, Floyd Davis Jr., and Rowland Davis. Siblings Myra Johnson, Beverly Armitage, and Robert Davis survive Mrs. Steve. Mrs. Steve spent many hours enjoying and loving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many neighborhood children. She studied and recorded her family genealogy as well as many other families in the Caroline area; she has donated her entire collection to the Caroline Historical Society. In keeping with Hazel's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private funeral and burial at Caroline Grove Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Groton Nursing Facilities Activities Fund, 120 Sykes St., Groton, NY. Perkins Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family would like to thank the staff at the Groton Nursing Facility, especially Becky and the second floor staff.
