Mary Ethel (Boettcher) Anderson

Mary Anderson, a long time Lynchburg resident, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. She was 96 years old. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Millard Othello Anderson. Mary was a devout Christian and a devoted and beloved daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was born on November 29, 1920, in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, the daughter of Victor Henry and Ethel (Baker) Boettcher. Upon graduation from Charleston High School in Charleston, West Virginia in 1939, Mary enrolled in Randolph-Macon Woman's College, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. In January 1940, she attended a Cotillion Club dance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where she met her husband to be, Cadet Millard Othello Anderson. The next fall, Millard was selected to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. They were married at West Point on June 1, 1943, following Millard's graduation. Mary graduated from Randolph-Macon a few days later and they began life as a military family. Millard's active duty military career in the Air Force took them and their growing family all over the world. They lived in Germany, New York, Virginia, Arizona, Turkey, Texas and finally back to Virginia. Life came full circle when Millard retired from the Air Force and took a job at Babcock & Wilcox in Lynchburg, Virginia, his hometown and location of Mary's alma mater, where she was a member of the first docent class for the Maier Museum. The family was made complete when Mary's mother Ethel Tucker also moved to Lynchburg. Mary was active at Court Street United Methodist Church and Oakwood Country Club. She volunteered at the Linkhorne Elementary School Library and was on the board of the YWCA. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. Mary loved to travel and visit the friends she and Millard made all over the world and she filled her home with unique and treasured collectibles from the special places she and her family lived during their travels. Mary was a dear friend to many and loved her bridge luncheons and sharing her love of cats and game shows with her grandchildren. Mary is survived by her son, Millard O. Anderson Jr., his wife, Mary Katherine and their children, Margaret, Kathy, Carol and Millard III; by her son, Richard V., his wife, Carol and their children, Beverly and Blake; by her daughter, Lisa Anderson-Lloyd, her husband, Rob and their children, Mary and Wesley; and by her daughter, Julie Anderson Brennan, her husband, Jay and their children, Robbie and Billy Pence. She is survived by 10 grandchildren, Margaret Moody, Carol Jones, Katherine Carmichael, Millard O. Anderson III, Beverly Blair, Blake Anderson, Mary Lloyd, Wesley Lloyd, Robbie Pence and Billy Pence. She is survived by 14 great-grandchildren, Buzz, Molly, and Melanie Moody, Jeffery Jones and Hannah Jones Goode, Charlie Byrd and Mary Elizabeth Pinckard, Bo and Camille Anderson, Brantley and Virginia Blair, Kyle and Elise Lloyd and Sawyer Lloyd and Jasmine Howell. She is also survived by a great-great-grandson, Price Lon Harris.
