Musician. Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, he was a cornet player, bandmaster and composer, best known for being a soloist in John Philip Sousa's Band. In 1893, he joined Sousa's Band, playing off and on for various venues with the group until 1905. He became band leader of the American Band in 1902 and his own band Clarke's Band of Providence in 1903, which recorded for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Clarke composed over 50 solos for cornet to include "Bride of the Waves" (1904), "Caprice Brilliante" (1908), "Southern Cross" (1911), "Sounds from the Hudson" (1914) and "Stars in a Velvety Sky" (1919). He also served as president of the American Bandmasters Association from 1934 until his death.
