Major League Baseball Player. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he made his debut with the Baltimore Orioles as a shortstop on August 7, 1965. For 18 seasons he played with the Baltimore Orioles 1965 to 1981 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1982. A defensive standout, he won eight Gold Glove Awards between 1969 and 1978, led the American League in assists, fielding percentage three times each and holds the highest career fielding average by an American League shortstop at .977 percent. He also was a member of the 1970 World Series Champion Baltimore Orioles and was on the 1976 American League All-Star team. He finished his career appearing in 2,016 games with 1,316 hits, 20 home runs, 389 runs batted in and .228 batting average. Belanger served as the Orioles' union representative for several years and was one of the four players who led negotiations during the 1981 strike. After his retirement as an active player he was employed by the MLB Players Association as a liaison to its membership, a post he held until his death. A heavy smoker, he died of lung cancer at the age of 54 in New York City.
