Olivia Archer was the fifth child and first daughter of Charlotte Matilda Pyfrom and Benjamin Vincent Archer. She was born in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, the Bahamas and was only a year old when the family moved to Key West. She grew up in Key West with her 11 siblings, with a 25 year range in ages. In 1859 she married Charles Walter Bethel, a ship carpenter. They lived next to her parents for a while before Charles built their home at 415 Simonton. Olivia and Charles had 13 children but only nine grew to adulthood: Clarence H. Bethel, born June 1857; Irene Bethel, born May 1858; Mary Olivia Bethel, born June 1860; Catherine Bethel, born 1861; Charles Bethel, born 1863; Nellie Bethel, born 1867; Charlotte Caroline Bethel, born August 9, 1870; Elizabeth M. Bethel, born October 1876; and Robert Earl Bethel, born July 12, 1878. Olivia survived her husband by nine days but died of "dropsy" at the age of 62. ©2010 by Claudia Naugle
