John Burtsfield was the son of Jacob Burtsfield and Elizabeth Jones Burtsfield, early pioneers to Marion County Ohio in 1828, and part of the migration of families from Franklin County Pennsylvania to northern Marion County.

The family at that time were converts to the baptist church and developed close ties with Captain John and Sophia (Clark) Van Meter, who were their neighbors in Grand Prairie Township. Through this bond, John became acquainted with the Van Meter's daughter Nancy Jane Van Meter whom her married, and by whom he fathered four children: Madison, Franklin, Sophia and John Wesley.

For his wife, John Burtsfield constructed what was then considered one of the finest homes in Grand Prairie Township, on Linn Hipsher Road. It is still standing immediately west of US 23.

Following Nancy Jane Burtsfield's death - coinciding with her son John Welsey's sixth birthday, John Burtsfield married Amanda Lucas. That marriage lasted until her death.

John Burtsfield spent the remainder of his life on the land left to him by his father, dying at the homestead on July 18, 1906 at the age of 84. At the time of his death he was the oldest person living in the township.

He was buried at VanMeter Cemetery (now called Burtsfield Cemetery) in Grand Prairie Township, Marion County Ohio.
