Inventor and industrialist. Henry Barnhart's 1883 United States Patent 285,100, made the steam shovel practical, durable and mobile. Barnhart mounted the shovel to a train car bed, and improved the strength and mobility of the crane portion of the shovel. Barnhart's design also allowed for a 180 degree range of motion. With backing from industrialist Edward Huber, Barnhart, Huber, Jacob Keiler and George W. King established the Marion Steam Shovel Company, later Marion Power Shovel, in Marion Ohio. Commercial production of "Barnhart's Wrecking Car" began in 1884. Barnhart died at his home on East Center Street in Marion, Ohio. The Marion Daily Star stated that the direct cause of death was thought to be heart problems, exacerbated by the prolonged bout of typhoid fever.
