John Bird

John Benasis of the 1st Michigan Sharpshooters, Company K. Enlisted in Co K for 3 years at age 22 in 1864. Year of birth about 1842.

He was present at Peebles Farm 4 November 1864.
After the war, he became a minster and was living in Baraga County. He was involved in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

His obituary states he was 71 years of age. While his death certificate shows him to have been 75.

John died on 9 may 1907 with the M.E Mission Cemetery as a burial location. His obituary names the Old Pinery Cemetery as a location.

On May 18th 1907, The Board of Supervisors of Baraga County authorized payment for his coffin to Matt Hansen for the amount of $15.00 Matt Hansen is the undertaker named on the death certificate.

John had been in failing health for a number of years prior to is death. There are several amounts authorizied for his general care in the county poor report.

It is not known if he has a military marker. Hopefully church or cemetery records exist confirming his burial.

If so, The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community government operations, or The Sons Of The Union Veterans, Albert & James Lyon Camp # 266, could petition the Veterans Administration for a military marker and formal dedication.
