James was the oldest surviving veteran from Andersonville Prison. He was born circa 1833 in Pennsylvania.
On 4 June 1860, James worked as a farm laborer for Anthony Rathbon in Midland, Midland County, Michigan. He could not read or write.
James was married circa 1867 to Ann Cronkright. Ann was born on 16 March 1843/1844 in Michigan, daughter of Charles Cronkright and Lydia C. Snyder.
On 3 June 1880, James and Ann lived in Homer, Midland County, Michigan with three children- Sherman, Emma, and Anna. James was working as a farmer while Ann was keeping house. All three children had attended school in the last year.
In 1890, James was living in Mayfield township. He reported having chronic diarrhea as a result of his Civil War service. He died on 30 August 1899 in Traverse City from carcinoma. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
On 13 June 1900, Ann lived on Bay Street in Traverse City. She was working as a day laborer.
James and Ann (Cronkright) Arnold were the parents of four children (one died before 1900):
i. MARY A. ARNOLD was born on 14 December 1865 in Michigan.
ii. SHERMAN ARNOLD was born circa 1866 in Michigan.
iii. EMMA ARNOLD was born circa 1868 in Michigan.
iv. ANNA V. ARNOLD was born circa 1872 in Michigan.
