Joseph B. Arnold was born on 23 October 1837 in Livingston County, Michigan, son of Linus Arnold and Emeline Braddock. On 2 August 1850, Arnold lived with the Abram Randall family in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. He had attended school in the last year.

On 30 June 1860, Joseph worked as a farm laborer in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan.

Joseph enlisted as a Private on 10 February 1861 at Grand Rapids to serve in Company C of the 2nd Michigan Cavalry. He was mustered out on 2 October 1861 at Louisville, Kentucky. He re-enlisted in October 1861 and served until 1864.

He was married on 7 March 1869 in Grand Rapids to Sarah Vanantwerp Gay. Srah was born circa 1845 in Lorain County, Ohio. Minister of the Gospel, Riley Hess conducted the ceremony, which was witnessed by Henry Wilbur and Alda? A. Hess.

On 25 June 1870, James and Sarah lived in Grand Rapids. Joseph worked as a brick maker while Sarah kept house. They owned $2,000 in real estate and $100 in personal property.

On 3 June 1880, Joseph and Sarah lived in Grand Rapids, where he worked as a laborer while she kept house. Sarah died on 6 July 1889 in Grand Rapids from cancer.

In 1890, Joseph lived in Grand Rapids. He has not been located on the 1900 census.

On 15 April 1910, Joseph and Caroline lived on E. Front Street in Traverse City. He was working as a cement mason. In January 1920, the couple lived at 619 Front Street in Traverse City. He was no longer working.

Joseph was married second on 4 December 1919 in Traverse City to Caroline (Watson) Moss. Denas Cochlin, pastor of the 1st Congregational Church, conducted the ceremony, which was witnessed by Mrs. N. A. Nelson and Mrs. S. M. Ries. Caroline was born circa 1850 in England, daughter of William Watson and Mary Masgrove, and had come to the United States in 1885 or 1890.

Joseph died from influenza on 23 February 1920 in Traverse City. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
