Samuel Anderson was born on 4 March 1820 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, son of James Anderson and Anna Stewart. He was married on 9 June 1845 in Coshocton County, Ohio to Margaret Younker. Margaret was born on 1 October 1827 in Ohio, daughter of John Younker and Edith Gault. In 1840, she lived with her parents and siblings in West Carlisle, Coshocton County, Ohio.

On 24 August 1850, Samuel and Margaret lived in Pike, Coshocton County, Ohio with three children- Henry, Edith, and William. Samuel worked as a wagon maker. The family owned $800 in property.

On 28 June 1860, the couple and four children- Henry, William, Elizabeth, and Angeline lived in Monroe, Coshocton County, Ohio. Samuel was working as a wagon maker. He owned $800 in real estate and $600 in person property.

Samuel served as a private in Company I of the 51st Ohio Infantry. He served from 3 October 1861 through 9 May 1862.

Samuel Anderson arrived in Traverse City in September 1866 and built a slab shanty in what was later called "Slabtown." The rest of the Anderson family moved to Traverse City in November 1866. Samuel wrote a letter to his wife telling her to take the steamer Alleghany from Chicago, but it was broken down. Son Will asked around and discovered that the propeller Dean Richmond was heading to Northport that night, 17 November, and they boarded and arrived in Northport on 19 November. They then boarded the steamer Sunny Side and traveled across the bay. Samuel built the first house on the South Side of Traverse City in 1867.

On 24 August 1870, Samuel and Margaret lived in Traverse City with their five children- Henry, William, Jennie, Angeline, and Maggie. Samuel worked as a wagon maker while Margaret was keeping house. Henry was teaching school, William was a painter, and the other three children were attending school.

On 25 June 1880, the couple lived on the south side of Traverse City with three daughters- Elizabeth, Angeline, and Maggie. Samuel was working as an undertaker while Margaret was keeping house. Oldest daughter Elizabeth was teaching school.

Margaret died on 4 April 1898 in Traverse City from paralysis.

Samuel died a week later, on 11 April 1898, also in Traverse City. Samuel Anderson was born March 4, 1820. When a young man he learned the wagon and carriage building trade. In 1843 he located in West Carlisle, Ohio where he married Margaret Yonker [sp]. At the time of the opening of the Civil War, Mr. Anderson responded to the first call for seventy-five thousand men to defend the Union.

Subsequently he served in the Fifty-first Ohio Infantry, with which he remained until 15 Dec 1864 when he was honorably discharged. He was loyal to the flag and during his three years service experienced many hardships.

In 1866 Mr. Anderson moved with his family to this city which was then in its infancy and has resided here ever since. Upon his arrival he opened a wagon shop on the south side and later started into the under- taking business, in after many years of devoting his entire time to the latter business.

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson had twelve children five of whom are now living. Harvey V., a prominent Chicago businessman, Miss Margaret, of Chicago, Will S., and the Misses Jennie and Angie of this city.

There are eight grandchildren, the oldest being 18.

Samuel and Margaret (Younker) Anderson were the parents of 12 children (four are unidentified):

i. HENRY H. ANDERSON was born circa 1846 in Ohio.
ii. EDITH A. ANDERSON was born circa 1848 in Ohio.
iii. WILLIAM S. ANDERSON was born on 21 May 1850 in West Carlisle, Coshocton County, Ohio.
iv. ELIZABETH JENNIE ANDERSON was born on 22 February1852 in Ohio. On 4 June 1900, Jennie worked as an undertaker. She lived at 204 W. 7th Street in Traverse City with her sisters Angeline and Margaret and her nephews and nieces- Ralph, Hervey, William, and Mable; as well as three boarders. She died on 14 August 1919 in Traverse City from diabetes. Jennie is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
v. ANGELINE D. ANDERSON was born in September 1858 in Ohio. She died on 2 March 1939 in Muskegon County, Michigan. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
vi. SAMUEL ANDERSON was born circa 1861 in Ohio. He drowned on 23 July 1869 in Traverse City from drowning.
vii. MARGARET E. ANDERSON was born on 17 NOvember 1864 in Spring Mountain, Coshocton, Ohio. She died on 20 February 1929 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
viii. BABY BOY ANDERSON was born on 10 June 1870 and died on 11 June 1870. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
